Habitat for Humanity Virginia License Plate FAQ’s:

1.  How do I submit an application for the new Habitat license plate?

a. Use the DMV’s license plate application (form VSA 10) for each request.  Remember to check “Special Interest” and write “Habitat for Humanity Virginia” on the line to the right of this block. You may download the form here.

b. Mail the completed form, along with a check made out to “Habitat for Humanity Virginia” to: Habitat for Humanity Virginia, ATTN:  Bookkeeper, P.O. Box 3358, Glen Allen VA 23058.

c. Cost for non-personalized plate is $25.00 per year.  If you want a personalized plate, the total cost is $35.00 per year.   This plate cost more than a standard special interest plate because it is considered a “revenue sharing” plate with Habitat for Humanity Virginia. Habitat for Humanity Virginia will receive $15.00 from each plate sold after the first 1,000 are issued.

d. Habitat for Humanity Virginia will forward the completed forms to the Virginia DMV, along with a check from Habitat for Humanity Virginia.

e. Your new plates will be mailed by DMV directly to your address. Your order will include one set of plates, year and month decals and a new vehicle registration card.

2.  Can I use the same character combination that I have for my current personalized plate?  YES, as long as it has six characters or fewer. All you have to do is check the box “Transfer Existing Plate” at the top of the DMV form. DMV’s license plate application form (VSA 10) allows you to submit up to four (4) prioritized choices for a personalized plate. However, if the character combination is not available, you will receive a production issued number and DMV will refund your $10 personalization fee.

a. For further guidance on selecting your personalized character combination see:  http://www.dmv.state.va.us/webdoc/citizen/vehicles/personalized_policy.asp

3.  Can I get a Habitat for Humanity Virginia plate for my motorcycle?  NO.  Special plates are available for passenger cars, multi-purpose vehicles, vans or trucks (up to 7500 lbs or less).  You can also use them on your leased vehicle.

4.  Is the design you have posted on your web site the actual design that will be on the new plates?  MAYBE.   Since the Virginia General Assembly and the Governor must approve our application, we won’t know what the final design looks like until some future date.  Once the final design is approved, we will post a picture on the Habitat for Humanity Virginia’s web site.

5. What happens if you don’t collect 450 prepaid applications?  You will get your money back.  Habitat for Humanity Virginia will deposit your check into a non-interest-bearing escrow account. We will mail you a check for the full amount you submitted if we don’t meet the minimum order by June 30, 2012.

6. Can I get a Habitat for Humanity plate with the International Symbol of Access (ISA aka wheelchair)?  YES

7. How long will it take to receive my new special plates?  A vote in the Virginia General Assembly will take place in the 2012 session. We submit the list of 450 applicants to the DMV in July 2012. DMV then begins the process of preparing the plates.

8. What if I change vehicles or move before the new plates are issued?  Send an updated application to Habitat for Humanity Virginia. If you move, remember to update your information with the DMV.
